Are Quartz Watches Good? An Honest Answer from a Watch Factory

/ jimala watch

Short answer: yes. For everyday wear, quartz watches are the practical choice — they are more accurate than mechanical watches, need almost no maintenance, and cost far less for the same look. That is not marketing spin; it is why the majority of fashion watches sold today, including every watch we make, run on quartz movements.

We are a watch factory in Shenzhen (Fengnian Watch Co., Ltd — jimala watch is our own brand), so we will give you the honest version, including when quartz is not the right answer.

What is a quartz watch?

A quartz watch uses a battery and a tiny vibrating quartz crystal to keep time. The crystal oscillates at a fixed frequency, which makes the watch remarkably consistent. A mechanical watch, by contrast, is powered by a wound spring and dozens of moving parts.

Why quartz is good

  • Accuracy. A typical quartz movement drifts by seconds per month. A healthy mechanical watch drifts by seconds per day. If you just want the right time, quartz wins.
  • Low maintenance. There is no winding and no servicing schedule. You replace the battery when it runs out — for most quartz movements that is every one to three years, a quick and inexpensive job at any watch shop.
  • Durability in daily life. Fewer moving parts means less that can be knocked out of alignment by everyday bumps.
  • Price for design. Because the movement is economical, more of the cost can go into the part you actually see — the dial, the case finish, the band.

When quartz is not the answer

If you love watchmaking as a craft — the sweep of a mechanical seconds hand, an heirloom to service and pass down — a mechanical or automatic watch is the right purchase, and it will cost accordingly. Quartz is the tool; mechanical is the hobby. Neither is wrong, they are just different purchases.

What to check before buying a quartz fashion watch

  • Stated specs, not vibes. A trustworthy listing tells you the movement type, case material and water resistance rating plainly. Ours are: quartz movement, zinc alloy case with a stainless steel caseback, water resistant to 3 ATM.
  • What the water rating actually means. 3 ATM means splash-safe — rain, hand-washing. It does not mean you should swim or shower with it. Any brand that says "waterproof" without a rating is cutting corners with words.
  • Returns. A fair return window (we give 30 days) tells you the seller expects the watch to hold up.

Common questions

How long do quartz watches last? The movement itself can run for many years; you only replace the battery every one to three years. Bands wear out first and can be swapped.

Do quartz watches stop if not worn? No — unlike an automatic, a quartz watch keeps running on its battery whether you wear it or not.

Are quartz watches considered cheap? Quartz movements are economical; the watch itself can be anywhere from disposable to luxury. What you should judge is the honesty of the specs and the quality of the finishing.
